A project garden beside your Obsidian notes

cells.garden is a free Obsidian project-management plugin. Turn a task board into a pixel-art garden, with a plant for each project and cells for its tasks, ideas and notes.

Work through the details on the kanban board, or tuck the board away to see your projects as a garden. It works on Obsidian desktop and mobile, and an account is optional.

Install the plugin

  1. In Obsidian, open Settings → Community plugins → Browse.
  2. Search for cells.garden, then install and enable it.
  3. Select the sprout in the ribbon, or run cells.garden: Open garden from the command palette.
  4. Explore the editable Tutorial plant, or add a plant, name its seed and use + in a layer to add your first cell.

Requires Obsidian 1.8.7 or later. You can also try the garden in your browser before installing.

Organize project work visually

The seed holds the project’s name or goal. Minerals collect raw ideas and references. Roots hold plans and prerequisites. Stem holds work in progress, and Flowers hold finished work.

Drag cells between layers as the project develops. Choose a plant shape and colours, then select part of the plant to find its task on the board. See the project planner guide for a complete example.

Local garden data, separate from your notes

Without an account, the plugin saves your garden, preferences and session in its data file inside the vault’s plugin folder. It does not scan your notes or automatically write garden changes into Markdown notes.

Use Export or import in the garden menu to back up your garden. Markdown export gives you one file per plant when you want a readable copy.

Moving from Garden Cells

If you used Max’s original Garden Cells plugin, run Import this vault’s garden to bring in plants from the Garden-Cells/ folder. Turn the original plugin off before enabling cells.garden, because their styles can conflict.

Sync with your browser and phone

Sign in with the same account in Obsidian, the web app and the Chrome extension to sync your garden. You can share a whole garden or a plant, assign cells to collaborators and receive assignments in the in-app inbox.

Sync is optional. The plugin is free and open source, with no ads or analytics. Read the privacy policy or visit the source repository for more details.
